    I am reminded of another joke on mathematics. A young lady asks a quiz at a party . . two cars are traveling towards each other at 5 kmph. The cars are 10 km apart. As the cars start moving, a bee starts flying from one are to the other at 30 kmph speed. When it reaches the opposite car, it turns around and starts flying towards the first car and so on until the two cars meet. The question was how much distance did the bee fly until the cars met. A math professor replied "30 km" in a moment. The lady said, your are a genius, Sir. It is simple, the cars would take one hour to meet and the bee would have have covered 30 km in that hour. But some silly persons would make it into a problem of infinite series and take all the time to solve the series. The professor exclaimed , but that is how I did it.

      I would say Statistics is the other side of the coin where one side is Mathematics. Math deals with surety while Stats deals with uncertainty. Eg. while lots of Math is involved in Physics but when you go to quantum level, it involves Probability. Same thing is happening in Economics & game theory (Sanjeev Sanyal brings about this insight very well) and many more disciplines.

    India's performance in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) faces challenges due to how the education system is set up. In India, there is a big focus on exams like the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), which stresses quick problem-solving and memorizing over understanding and creativity. This focus makes it hard for students to develop the problem-solving skills needed for success in the IMO.
    There are also many fake Olympiads, like the SOF IMO, that can mislead students and take away time and resources from real preparation. Additionally, many students feel pressure to pursue careers in engineering and medicine, so they don’t focus as much on mathematics. This contributes to why India doesn’t have as many celebrated mathematicians or Fields Medal winners. Unless the education system starts to focus more on creativity and exploration, India's achievements in international math competitions will likely continue to lag behind other countries.

    • @Maths_3.1415
      @Maths_3.1415 Месяц назад +2

      Another point to note is that when I speak the truth, some obnoxious people reply that I can’t clear the JEE, which is why I must be saying all this nonsense. They claim the JEE is the hardest exam in the world and dismiss any criticism, insisting that the JEE is the best.

    The reason why IMO students in US can dedicate more time (5 months) for preparation is because talented 12th grade seniors have completed their college applications and almost finished high school. Either they relax and enjoy the last semester or dedicate time for such pursuits as this or others (eg. on job training / internships / leadership / mentorship etc ).

    Great discussion with the eminent professors.
    One thing I disagree to and this purely my opinion.
    When they said that Chinese students go through rigorous training and cruel process. But they are winning what you are also aiming for and also all the Indian students go to the US and serve them in the future. But china gives their students opportunities and platform to pursue what they want and they might do very well for their country. So all this goodie goodie behaviour and criticising chinese strategy isnt helping us a bit.

    What Prof. Niranjan Balachandran says about the reasons haw china is able to perform so very well in Maths Olympiad is very true. It is equally true about their achievements in Olympics, innovation & manufacturing, infrastructure building, etc. The totalitarian system, and the burning ambition and focus of the CPP to dominate the world in all aspects of life drive the chinese in all their endeavours. Candidates with high Potential and promise are scouted for, and those identified and chosen are put through extremely rigorous and gruelling training. Obviously there will be several who fail to one successful candidate in every field. While the successful ones win medals, accolades and international prestige to china, and are well taken care of by the state, those who fail are ruthlessly left to fend for themselves. All the achievements of china come with great human cost but the CPP relentlessly and single-mindedly pursues their international goals completely disregarding the consequences to their citizens. This approach of the CPP does not bode well for china in the longer term, but CPP's failure may be in the interests of rest of the world.

    Teaching math and being academically gifted in math are two different ball games.
    Most Professors in colleges might have a PhD in Math but they can't teach the subject.
    Rarely you would find someone who is gifted in both the departments. That's why most people end up hating math.

    I see that TIFR conducts IMO-IND but not sure if they are sponsors too. I think the Indian IMO body should approach TATA / TCS or Infosys to build brand value around it just like what has happened in chess. I think it will be complimentary to their Chess sponsorship.

    Government ko ISI aur CMI ko IMO ke liye students select karne aur unhe train karne ki responsibility de deni chahiye.
    IChO and and IPhO ke liye IISc and IISERs
